Note: Received an email from a customer regarding this problem and the following suggestion to remedy this has been put forward (please note that this has not been verified): "I found a temp solution; by changing the port to 109 then hit send and receive you will get another error. Close that box, go back and change port back to 110 and it works fine as long as you don't shut down. Still looking for a permanent fix, everyone says its the firewall but i'm not so sure."

Message cannot be downloaded from server due to known bug in Outlook Express (any Non Microsoft email package will retrieve message) so delete email off server. To delete e-mail off server: (MAKE SURE YOU FIRST HAVE A CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET) then click Start, Run, and type in "Telnet" and press Enter. Click on the Terminal Menu and select Preferences, ensure that Local Echo has a tick next to it. Click on the Connect menu and select Remote System. A box will appear, you need to make sure the Host Name is set to pop.[yourISP], and the Port is set to 110. Click on Connect. You should see a message at the top starting with '+OK'. If you can see this you are connected. Windows XP users> You now have a black command screen. Type in:

o pop.freeserve.com 110

Press enter you should now see a ‘+OK’ response. If you can see this you are connected. You now need to identify yourself so that you can access your email, to do this type in the following:

user [YOUR USERNAME]

E.G = user smith.tiscali.co.uk

Press enter you should now see a ‘+OK’ response. Now type:

pass [YOUR PASSWORD]

E.G = pass 12345abcde

Press enter and you should now see a ‘+OK’ response. type: "List"

And you will see a list of any emails currently stored on your account. The figure on the left is the email number, and the figure on the right is the size of the email, eg:1 12342 5612

To delete an email type in either:

"Dele nX" or "Dele X" <X is the number on the left of the list of e-mails

Repeat the above procedure for all emails you wish to delete REMEMBER in order for these changes to become permanent you must finish your Telnet session by typing quit followed by enter.

Find out if you have "Caller Line Identification" or try this - Double left click My Computer, Double left click Dialup Networking, right click [yourISP] connection, left click Properties clear Area Code box, type in tel no box [area code],ISP Telephone No.]

"The line was dropped and connection lost while the user was either downloading or sending mail" - Try unplugging other devices on your phone line. Check to make sure you don’t have call waiting.

Is the modem set to disconnect after a set time? Control Panel, Modems, and Connection.

Is the modem phone line still plugged in?

Make sure you are not trying to send e-mail while connected to another ISP.

This problem has been observed in some configurations that use antivirus software to scan e-mail. The products in which this problem occurs may vary. However, these symptoms have been observed in configurations that include Norton Internet Security 2005, Norton AntiVirus 2003, Norton AntiVirus 2002, or McAfee software products.

Whichever software is in use 'Email and Scan outgoing Email' has been turned on..

To resolve this:

  • Start Norton AntiVirus.
  • Click Options. Select Norton AntiVirus. The Norton AntiVirus Options dialog box appears.
  • In the Internet section, click Email.
  • Click to clear the Scan incoming Email and Scan outgoing Email check box.
